What does a senior Java developer do?
A senior Java developer builds and owns the backend systems your business runs on: APIs, business logic, data storage and integrations with third-party systems. Typical tools are Spring Boot, Hibernate/JPA, relational and NoSQL databases and messaging with Apache Kafka.
The difference to a mid-level profile isn't syntax, it's decisions: how to cut a service, how to keep a system stable under load, how to modernize a monolith without downtime – and how to write code your team will still understand in five years.
Core tasks of a senior Java developer
When you need a senior Java developer
New features take longer and longer because every change to a grown monolith has unexpected side effects. Under load, response times climb, database queries become the bottleneck and outages hit your customers directly. At the same time, interfaces to partners, payment providers or business systems depend on code that hardly anyone on the team fully understands anymore.
At the latest when a move to microservices is due, your product needs to grow significantly or your internal team can no longer keep up with the backlog, you need experienced developers who take ownership. These are exactly the situations in which companies contact us.
